Xabi Alonso will not be the next manager of Liverpool.
The Spaniard has communicated his decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for another season, and the Reds will have to look elsewhere as they try to replace Jurgen Klopp.
Alonso’s decision to stay at Leverkusen rocked many Liverpool supporters, but according to James Pearce, the sense within the club is much calmer.
Indeed, speaking on the Walk On Podcast, Pearce has shared what people within Liverpool have been saying after Alonso’s decision

Pearce shared what he’s been told by those within Liverpool after Alonso made his decision.
“It’s interesting because in the process of speaking to people at the club off the back of the Alonso news they were keen to stress ‘look, Alonso would’ve been a strong candidate, but to be clear he wasn’t offered the job, nothing was on the table, there have been no face-to-face talks’. The contact was only ever done with his camp, and conversations I had with people last week led onto them saying that there wasn’t a preferred candidate,” Pearce said.
Liverpool will be fine
The Alonso news felt like a disastrous moment for Liverpool when it broke last week, but, by the sounds of it, those within the club aren’t too fussed.
This is just one name that can now be crossed off their shortlist, he wasn’t their one and only target, even if he was a strong candidate.
Of course, the job of replacing Jurgen Klopp is one of the toughest tasks Liverpool will ever have to face, but with Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards on the job, we’re sure the Reds will be just fine.
Liverpool are the type of club you can trust to get this decision right, and while a post-Klopp era will be scary, the Reds should be fine.
