It is has been astonishing year for boss Xabi Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen – and the links with the Liverpool hotseat will come as no surprise with Jurgen Klopp set to leave Anfield in the summer.
Alonso has starred in his role as Leverkusen manager. The Spaniard has guided Leverkusen to top of the Bundesliga, 10 points clear of Bayern Munich. An incredible feat given Bayern’s dominance in Germany.
Indeed, Leverkusen remain undefeated this season. Michael Edwards is on board with a move for the Leverkusen boss, to bring him to Liverpool this summer. His agent has spoken to Liverpool, already.
Others have been linked. Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, Lens boss Franck Haise, too. But the absolute front runner is Alonso given his ties to Liverpool, and his work as manager of Leverkusen during 23-24.
It is unclear what Alonso’s stance is on a move to Liverpool but you would imagine that the chance to replace Klopp at a club the size of Liverpool – one of his old sides – will surely tempt the former player.

Especially, given Klopp is leaving Liverpool in excellent state. The Reds are fighting for a Premier League title – level on points with leaders Arsenal and a point behind Manchester City in the race for first place.
Leverkusen’s stance is also unclear. They will be desperate to keep Alonso, with Leverkusen having denied that there is a release clause in his contract. Liverpool will have to work hard to get the Spaniard.
Indeed, Leverkusen’s players are just as keen on keeping him at the club. Alex Grimaldo, 28, told Marca this week he is hoping to continue working with Alonso – but thinks he’ll have already made up his mind.
“It is something we have not considered yet. It is too soon. He will know what decision to make. It is clear that I would like to continue to develop with him,” Grimaldo said, to Spanish newspaper Marca.
