‘It fell through’: £37m Premier League player admits he could’ve signed for Man Utd

Manchester United have had their fair share of transfer near misses over the years.

From Frenkie De Jong to Jude Bellingham, the Red Devils have missed out on some truly fantastic players in recent times.

Perhaps the most painful transfer near miss of the modern era is Cody Gakpo. The Dutch attacker didn’t only not sign for United, but he would eventually join their biggest rivals, Liverpool.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Gakpo has now been discussing how close he came to joining Manchester United, and he says that he actually spoke to Erik Ten Hag about a potential move, but, ultimately, it fell through.

Cody Gakpo could’ve joined Manchester United

The £37m attacker spoke about almost moving to Old Trafford.

“It was the summer before. I was in contact with the club and the manager – he’s Dutch so I spoke to him as well,” Gakpo recalled.

“At the end of the day it fell through, that’s it, and in the winter Liverpool came. It was the best decision for me.”

For the best

Gakpo says that joining Liverpool was the best decision for him, and he’s not wrong.

Not only did he end up scoring in a 7-0 win over United just a few weeks after joining Liverpool, he’s now already won his first trophy with the Reds and looks on course to potentially win a league title.

Meanwhile, Manchester United look unlikely to get into the top four, and many of the Red Devils’ attacking players have struggled to find any sort of form this season.

Gakpo opting to join Liverpool rather than Manchester United does appear to be a fantastic career choice.
