'Is in slow motion': Jamie Carragher hits out at £35m Liverpool player after Manchester United loss

Jamie Carragher hit out at Cody Gakpo as Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup in stunning fashion by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be wondering how exactly they have missed out on reaching the semi-final. The Reds were 3-2 ahead during extra-time, with Harvey Elliott’s deflected strike putting them in front.

But two goals conceded in the second-half of extra-time saw Liverpool’s hopes of winning the quadruple come to the end.

Cody Gakpo came on 13 minutes before the end of the 90 minutes, with Mohamed Salah being replaced. Unfortunately, the Dutchman was unable to make the desired impact after coming off the bench.

Gakpo has come in for some criticism this season. He has arguably been the most underwhelming of the devastating forward line at Anfield. And Jamie Carragher was clearly not impressed by the 24-year-old’s contribution after his introduction against Manchester United.

Dutchman now needs to step up

Gakpo does appear to be a level below the starting front three. Obviously, few compare with Mohamed Salah. But Darwin Nunez appears to have taken a step forward this season.

Meanwhile, Diogo Jota never seems to let the side down. And Luis Diaz was exceptional for so much of last week’s draw with Manchester City.

Gakpo has scored 20 goals in 67 games for Liverpool. In fairness, he is someone who is moved around more than most. He can even drop back into the midfield.

But he is not doing anywhere near enough to put pressure on those at the top of the pecking order. And few will probably have too many positive things to say about those who featured for the Reds in extra-time.

Gakpo was definitely one of those who failed to impress on such an agonising day for Klopp’s men.
