Jurgen Klopp is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
The German will leave Anfield this summer, and the Reds have a massive job on their hands when it comes to finding a replacement for the former Borussia Dortmund man.
Klopp is one of the greatest managers of all-time, and whoever replaces him will have big shoes to fill.
At the moment, it looks as though Xabi Alonso is the frontrunner for the job, but a few years ago, it looked as though another former Liverpool midfielder would be in the mix.
Indeed, Steven Gerrard looked to be a coach on the up a few years ago, and even Klopp himself said that he was a future Liverpool manager in waiting.
However, now, Gerrard looks to be damaged goods and a spell in Saudi Arabia certainly hasn’t helped him raise his stock.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Kenny Dalglish has been discussing Gerrard’s managerial career, and he reckons that if Klopp had left Liverpool sooner, Gerrard would’ve had a real chance of getting this job.

The Liverpool legend spoke about the Al-Ettifaq gaffer.
“I thought Shearer would’ve been a manager, Souness, there’s not really too many. Steven, he got off to a great start going to Rangers and doing well, came down to Villa, and I think Steven if Jurgen had made his decision two or three years ago, he would’ve been in with a shout, but whether he’s still in the frame for them I don’t know, but he knows the football club,” Dalglish said.
Timing is everything
Football management is just as much about luck and timing as it is about skill.
You can easily climb the managerial ladder by getting the right opportunities at the right times.
After his spell with Rangers and his first season at Aston Villa, Gerrard looked like he was ready to be a top coach, but the past 18 months have completely destroyed his managerial reputation.
Liverpool perhaps had a lucky escape with this one, and as much as he’s a club legend, it now looks unlikely that Gerrard will ever manage Liverpool.
