'In the last hours': Sky Sports journalist shares 'clear information' about Xabi Alonso after Liverpool links

8 months ago 162

Xabi Alonso has been heavily linked with the Liverpool job, and Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has shared the latest on the situation.

Jurgen Klopp shocked the world in January by announcing that he would be stepping down as the manager of the club at the end of the season.

The German is a world-class manager. He is the biggest reason why Liverpool have been so successful in recent years, and he will be a huge loss.

Alonso has been described as Liverpool’s number-one target, but Sky Germany’s Plettenberg has some bad news for Reds fans now.

Xabi Alonso update amid Liverpool and Bayern Munich links

Xabi Alonso is arguably the most wanted manager in Europe right now.

The Spaniard has done a remarkable job at Bayer Leverkusen. They are on top of the Bundesliga table and are all set to dethrone Bayern Munich.

Whatever happens in the next few months, Alonso is expected to leave the BayArena.

Liverpool and Bayern both want to appoint him as their new manager, but Plettenberg has now claimed that if Alonso leaves Leverkusen, he’ll be moving to Munich, not Merseyside.

He said on Sky Sports: “Bayern Munich has confirmed again in the last hours and in the last days, from my sources around Bayern Munich, they are confident to sign him. They are pushing for him.

“But, there are no negotiations. Talks have taken place, no negotiations. It’s difficult to get him, but Bayern Munich is optimistic.

And, if someone like Uli Hoeneß, the president, the super-boss of the club, if he confirms in public that Xabi Alonso is a name they are targeting, then that means everything.

“For sure, clubs like Liverpool and Real Madrid, they want to sign him. But, again, our clear information: If he would leave Leverkusen in the summer, he will join Bayern Munich and not Liverpool.”

Liverpool have two alternatives for Xabi Alonso

Nothing’s confirmed just yet, but if Liverpool do miss out on Xabi Alonso, they will turn to one of the other names on their list.

The Reds have been linked with plenty of managers since Jurgen Klopp announced he will be stepping down. Alonso was the most popular one, but there are a few other interesting options as well.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is one of them. The 39-year-old is a terrific manager. He has done a fantastic job at the Estádio José Alvalade, and he would be a great option for the Reds.

Another manager Liverpool could turn to is Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian has shown his quality in the Premier League with Brighton and Hove Albion, and although things haven’t always worked this season, we think he would be a good shout for the Anfield hot seat.

It will be interesting to see what Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will do in the coming weeks and months.

We still expect them to pursue Alonso, but if he doesn’t accept Liverpool, they should swiftly move on to their other targets.
