‘In a heartbeat’: Mark Lawrenson says he’d love to see 58-year-old manager take over at Liverpool

Liverpool will need a new manager this summer.

Jurgen Klopp has announced he’s leaving the Reds at the end of the season, and the search for a new gaffer is on.

So, who will the new manager be? Well, a number of potential Klopp successors have been touted, and speaking to Off The Ball, Mark Lawrenson has now named the man he wants to see take over.

Indeed, Lawrenson says that he’d take Ange Postecoglou from Tottenham in a heartbeat, claiming that the 58-year-old is very similar to Jurgen Klopp and could be perfect for Liverpool.

Mark Lawrenson wants Ange Postecoglou at Liverpool

The pundit gave his verdict on who should take over.

“Everything is flying around about who should be this, who’s the new manager and all that. I’ll beat you to it just in case you ask me the question. I would take Postecoglou in a heartbeat. He’s very much like Klopp. He gets players to play for him. He looks to play a certain way, I think he’d get Liverpool, Shankly, those kinds of things, I think he’s a Liverpool supporter anyway. I’d take him. I just look at him and I think he’s got it. The players really like to play with him,” Lawrenson said.

Perfect

We can absolutely see where Lawrenson is coming from here.

Postecoglou would be perfect for Liverpool. His style of play with his high line and emphasis on attack would perfectly pick up from where Klopp is leaving off, while his personality suits the club to a tee.

Unfortuantely, Postecoglou’s personality also means he’s very loyal, and it’s hard to imagine that he’ll jump ship from Tottenham after just one season in north London when he appears to be building something rather special.

This would be a great appointment, but we can’t see it actually coming to fruition.
