Liverpool have got the ball rolling with regards to their summer overhaul in the boardroom.

Earlier this week, the Reds announced that Michael Edwards would be joining FSG as CEO of Football.

The 44-year-old will assume his position on June 1 and oversee football operations for the ownership group.

Edwards previously worked at Liverpool in a number of positions including sporting director, spending 10 successful years at Anfield.

However, there are more positions the Reds are likely to fill. For instance, Bournemouth’s Richard Hughes has been linked with a move to Anfield.

Earlier this month, the 44-year-old’s current employers confirmed that he will be leaving the Vitality Stadium in the summer.

Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth, writing on GiveMeSport, has now described Hughes to Liverpool as an “imminent” appointment.

“The first appointment which will be imminent will be Richard Hughes,” he wrote.

“We know that he’s left Bournemouth and he will then come in as the sporting director, and then that is when the crucial appointment will have to be made.

“When we talk about Manchester United, that they’ve got to hit the jackpot with every single transfer, Liverpool have effectively done that in the past few years and hence why they’ve been really successful.

“Because they’ve had a team and a recruitment team in place for the most part with Michael Edwards involved, until he left, alongside Jurgen Klopp and the recruitment team.

“Now you’ve got a situation where Klopp is leaving.”

Liverpool seemingly closing in on Richard Hughes

It’s good to hear Sheth seem so confident about Hughes coming to Liverpool. The Reds are moving quickly to overhaul their boardroom ahead of Jorg Schmadtke’s end-of-season exit.

With both Schmadtke and Klopp leaving, it’s important for Liverpool to source and appoint replacements of similar calibre to ensure continuity.

Edwards is certainly of great calibre, as is Hughes. Then we’ll see who the Reds can get in the dugout. Xabi Alonso would certainly be the dream Klopp replacement.
