'I would': ESPN pundit says Liverpool should replace Mo Salah with £45m player with while he's away

Steve Nicol has named the Liverpool player he would bring into the forward line to replace Mohamed Salah while the Egyptian is on international duty.

Many will be fearful for the Reds with Mohamed Salah set to link up with the Egypt squad over the coming weeks, with AFCON 2023 set to run until mid-February.

Salah has scored four goals across his last four games. He now has 14 goals and eight assists in the Premier League this season. So he leaves a massive hole in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Steve Nicol backs Diogo Jota to replace Mohamed Salah in Liverpool attack

The good news for the Reds is that they do have plenty of attacking options right now. And speaking on ESPN, Steve Nicol has suggested that he would bring Diogo Jota in alongside Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

“There’s just no other way to say it than it’s going to be difficult to get the goals that he gets. But the fact is they’ve got players with ability that can produce enough goals to win games. And I don’t think anybody can argue that,” he said.

“Now, the fact is they’ve got to now go and do that. But at least Klopp now has options on players who have ability, who will get into scoring positions. Unfortunately for Klopp, Salah’s the one guy when he gets into a position where you know he’s going to score. I don’t suppose you can say that with anybody else in the front-line.

“I would go with Diaz on the left, I would have Nunez up in the middle and I’d have Jota on the right.”

Portuguese will be desperate to make up for lost time

Jota is still returning to full fitness after spending a month on the sidelines from the end of November. But he has certainly made an impact upon his return.

The Portuguese scored against Burnley to seal the points at Turf Moor. And he provided an assist on Monday as Liverpool beat Newcastle. It was the £45 million star who also won the penalty which made the game safe.

Jota is actually Liverpool’s joint second highest goalscorer in the Premier League this season. And that is despite the 26-year-old only making eight starts in the top-flight so far.

If he can remain fit over the next six weeks, he could definitely soften the blow of Liverpool losing arguably the best player in the Premier League right now in Salah.
