‘I would be amazed’: Journalist says he’d be shocked if Liverpool signed £40m player anytime soon

Liverpool continue to be linked with new midfield additions, and now, they’re apparently keen on Leeds’ Archie Gray.

Indeed, it was reported this week that the Reds were eyeing up a move for the 17-year-old as Gray continues to impress in the Championship with Leeds United, but, according to Neil Jones, that may not be the most realistic of rumours.

Speaking on The Redmen TV, Jones gave his verdict on this story, and he reckons that Gray’s agent may just be using Liverpool to get his client’s name out there, claiming that he would be amazed if Liverpool went out and spent £40m on a player so unproven at the top level.

Gray to Liverpool unlikely for £40m

Jones shared his verdict on this rumour.

“£40m seems like a huge fee. I think there’s a bit of that at play with agents putting clubs in, we’ve seen Liverpool used in the past. Liverpool would be aware of any 17-year-old making waves in any league, it’s an interesting player, but I would be amazed if Liverpool spend £40m on a 17-year-old at this point unless they were convinced he was the best young player in the country,” Jones said.

Too much

We have to agree with Jones here, it would be a shock if Liverpool spent this kind of money on Gray.

The Reds aren’t averse to signing top young players from the Championship – just look at Fabio Carvalho as an example, but, they do these deals on the cheap where possible.

Gray is a good player, but £40m for a teenager with only a handful of senior appearances to his name is ridiculous, and it’s not the type of deal Liverpool usually go for.

Maybe this is one that could be revisited in a few years’ time, but, right now, we can’t imagine Liverpool making this move.
