Joe Gomez has admitted he was ‘gutted’ when James Milner left Liverpool on a free transfer over the summer.

James Milner will undoubtedly go down as a Liverpool legend after a hugely successful eight-year spell at Anfield.

The Englishman was an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad which scooped every major honour at club level between 2019 and 2023.

While Milner wasn’t exactly one of the first names on the team sheet, his versatility and experience proved to be vital for Klopp after the midfielder joined from Manchester City in 2015.

After eight years at Anfield, the 38-year-old left on a free transfer over the summer and made the switch to Brighton to link up with Roberto De Zerbi.

And Gomez has been speaking to Liverpool’s official website about his former teammate.

Gomez discussed the standards Milner set behind the scenes and admitted he was sad to see the veteran move on over the summer.

“Milly [Milner] knows that I didn’t want to hear certain things but I always understood why he was doing it and Milly left here and I was gutted,” the defender said.

“I think he knows that. But at times he didn’t worry about Joe is going to think this, and likewise, with other players, he didn’t worry about it.

“So there is a necessity to have players who don’t worry about that [being liked].”

Previously lauded as an ‘unbelievable’ player by Paul Merson, Milner is still going strong in England’s top flight at the age of 38.

Yet, it did feel like the right time for the Englishman to move on over the summer as Klopp continues to rebuild a new-look squad.

The likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino also departed, with the Reds moving to bring younger players in.

Nevertheless, Milner has probably been a huge miss behind the scenes at Liverpool and you can understand why Gomez was devastated to see him move on.
