Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was a happy man last weekend as his side beat Liverpool in the FA Cup.
Fernandes played his part in a stunning 4-3 game at Old Trafford which had everything. Controversy, late goals, and an atmosphere not seen at Old Trafford for some time made it a special occasion.
Of course, for Fernandes, being United skipper means winning against your biggest rivals is of paramount importance.
Indeed, prior to Sunday’s win, Fernandes’ record against Liverpool was poor, with just one Premier League win from six, albeit Fernandes was part of the United side to beat Liverpool in the FA Cup back in 20/21.
Fernandes has been a divisive figure among some since being made captain. Indeed, Emile Heskey recently said that Erik ten Hag needs to be careful how he treats his skipper.
This week, Fernandes is away with Portugal on international duty. And speaking about his club-form and United in general, ‘Bruno’ has admitted that Liverpool have been well clear of the Red Devils for some time now.

Speaking to the Portuguese press, with quotes from United’s official website, Fernandes conceded that Liverpool and Man City have been miles better than United in recent times.
“I want to stay here. I want to be part of a project that has feet, legs, body and head, everything that is needed so that we can compete with Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, who are the clubs that have been in the best shape. City and Liverpool above all, and Arsenal, who, in the last two or three years, have also been growing.
“After last year, when I think we had a good season for the expectations that existed and for my expectations, [because] I was aware that we weren’t going to be at the same level as Liverpool and City. I was aware of that but I was also aware that we could compete or be closer, and we were closer to competing with them. We reached two finals, we won one, we lost another. We reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League.”
Fernandes key to hauling in Liverpool and City
These are interesting comments from Bruno Fernandes. While they show a recognition of the brilliance of Liverpool and City, it’s not exactly what United fans will want to see.
Fernandes is a talented player and ultimately, as captain, he is going to have to take responsibility in getting United back to those levels.
Sure, we all know Liverpool and City have been outstanding and that Arsenal are coming as well.
But Manchester United have the resources and power to get back amongst it and Fernandes needs to lead his team into that mix.
Next season feels massive for them. Another failed title challenge will only add to the pressure. Put simply, United and Fernandes must get closer.
