Liverpool were a bit of a mess when Jurgen Klopp arrived at the club.
Key players such as Raheem Sterling and Luis Suarez had recently departed, and their replacements didn’t exactly live up to expectations.
However, despite the strange mish-mash of players the Reds had at that time, the Merseyside club did have some very talented players during that period.
Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino were both top talents, and speaking on the Sky Sports Football Podcast, Jurgen Klopp has also named Christian Benteke as a player he really rated at that time, going as far as to say that he tried to sign him for Borussia Dortmund before he came to Anfield.

The Liverpool manager spoke about the £32m man during his time at Liverpool.
“You could see it, there were so many good players, players I wanted to sign in the past to be honest, Christian Benteke for example, and Bobby Firmino, Hendo I knew from a lot of matches I’d watched, Coutinho, but you could see from the way they played they didn’t feel or think they fill the shirt, I thought they were more than good enough to do that, and my job was to convince the players about that,” Klopp said.
Didn’t click
It’s interesting to hear that Klopp wanted Benteke during his time at Dortmund, because he really didn’t click with him at Anfield.
There’s a reason Benteke only lasted a season under Klopp, he was out of form, out of favour and out of his plans within a few months of the German’s arrival on Merseyside.
Benteke was a talented player at one point, but this wasn’t a match made in heaven.
Perhaps it would’ve worked out differently in the Bundesliga, but this really didn’t work out for the best at Anfield.
