There has now been a new twist regarding Xabi Alonso as Liverpool and Bayern Munich battle to hire the 42-year-old.

It was Florian Plettenburg and Gianluca Di Marzio who provided the updates.

So, what is the latest on Xabi Alonso for Liverpool fans to digest? Let’s take a look…

Xabi Alonso latest

Well – according to TEAMtalk – Liverpool have offered the Spaniard a contract until 2027 following positive discussions.

It came after Foot Mercato stated that Alonso is keen to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Now – however – Plettenburg and Di Marzio are claiming that Bayern Munich have the best chance of hiring the man from Tolosa.

It is said that those in the boardroom at the Allianz Arena are all unanimously determined to bring Alonso to Munich, and believe he can shape a new era at the club following a few underwhelming seasons.

Di Marzio said: “I thought Liverpool were ahead of Bayern two or three weeks ago, but now Bayern are moving quickly because they believe he’s the perfect coach for the future. At the moment Bayern are ahead of Liverpool.”

Plettenburg added: “ALL of the bosses want to sign Alonso. (Uli) Hoeness, (Karl-Heinz) Rummenigge, all members of the board. He is supposed to shape a new era. To sign Alonso is the main task for (Max) Eberl now.”

Liverpool already exploring alternatives

Fortunately, Liverpool are not putting all of their eggs into one basket, with some alternatives to Alonso already being shortlisted.

The Guardian believe Liverpool have enquired about Roberto De Zerbi as a backup option.

A story from The Times adds that FSG are likely to hold talks with Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP.

Furthermore, Julian Nagelsmann has been linked with the impending vacancy, as has Simone Inzaghi of Inter Milan.

Clearly, Liverpool are not just focusing on Alonso, which is probably for the best as Bayern Munich ramp up their pursuit of the Bayer Leverkusen boss.
