'I think': Rio Ferdinand shares whether he thinks Liverpool should have had a penalty on Sunday

Rio Ferdinand has now been discussing the controversial penalty call that took place between Liverpool and Manchester City on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp was incensed after the game when Liverpool weren’t awarded a spot-kick after Jeremy Doku raised his boot into Alexis Mac Allister’s chest.

The reaction to the late moment has been fairly split, some feel there was sufficient contract on the ball beforehand, even saying that the Liverpool man exaggerated the contact.

And then on the other hand, people strongly believe that Doku would have been pulled up for a foul anywhere else on the pitch.

Of course, the moment has received so much attention because it could transpire to be so important in the title race.

Liverpool would have been flying out in first place if they had then dispatched the penalty, which Mohamed Salah may have been ready to blast home.

That being said, Rio Ferdinand was discussing the incident at length on his podcast, FIVE.

Ferdinand certainly knew a thing or two about making challenges in his own box during his playing days, and felt Mac Allister was definitely fouled.

Rio Ferdinand says Liverpool definitely deserved a late penalty against Man City

There was certainly no doubt in Klopp’s mind after the game, and Ferdinand did echo his thoughts.

Disagreeing with some of his fellow presents, Ferdinand summarised: “I think it’s a penalty, because I think it’s a foul anywhere else [on the pitch].”

And in truth, it does seem pretty hard to argue with Ferdinand on this one, Liverpool did deserve a penalty.

Peter Drury did share what the VAR officials said immediately after the tackle, explaining why the decision wasn’t overturned.

It seemed to be one of those calls where VAR wouldn’t have changed the decision either way, and it came down to the referee’s discretion.

But ultimately no penalty was given, even Ferdinand did think the tackle would have resulted in a Liverpool free-kick anywhere else on the pitch.

But to play devil’s advocate, perhaps there should be a slightly higher threshold when awarding a penalty, even if that barometer may have also been met on this occasion.

All that being said, Jamie Carragher has now shared his view on who will win the league after that draw
