Darwin Nunez is really finding his feet at Liverpool this season.
Yes, he’s still not perfect and his game needs plenty of finetuning, but the Uruguayan is massively improved from last season and he’s made a serious impact for the Reds this term.
However, with that being said, he’s far from the first name on Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet at the moment, and while some are struggling to get their heads around that fact, others seem to agree with Klopp’s stance.
Speaking to Squawka, Jose Enrique has been discussing Liverpool’s striking options, and while he says he’s a fan of Nunez, he’d still rather use Diogo Jota or Cody Gakpo as Liverpool’s starting number nine.

Enrique gave his verdict on Liverpool’s striking options.
“I think he’s improved a lot since he’s arrived, it’s true. I still believe that, for me, I’d like to play Jota and Gakpo as a striker before him. I still believe that. Now, he’s doing well, yeah, no one can take that from him. And in a very, very difficult situation, he’s still fighting and trying to get that. The good thing is that Liverpool fans love him, and give him that confidence, extra confidence, that he needs to keep improving on that. But for me, in a way that I believe is like Firmino was for this tema, not a chance, and I don’t think he will ever be. But not him, not even Gakpo or Jota, even. But if you ask me, between the three of them, I actually believe Gakpo and Jota are in front of him as a number nine,” Enrique said.
Difficult
This is a really difficult argument to navigate.
On one hand, Nunez is probably the most dangerous of these strikers on his day, but, at the same time, he’s not consistent.
Meanwhile, someone like Jota is very consistent, and while he may not have the fear factor that Nunez has, you can always rely on him to give his all and pop up with important goals at important times.
In our view, Jota may be Liverpool’s best striking option when fit, but the £45m man certainly has massive competition in the shape of Nunez and Gakpo.
