129 Liverpool need to find a new manager, but just as importantly, they need to find a new Sporting Director.
Indeed, the Reds still haven’t properly replaced Julian Ward after his departure from the club, and with Jorg Schmadtke’s short-term work with the club coming to an end, the Merseysiders need to find a new transfer chief.
Michael Edwards has been linked with a return to Anfield as of late, and speaking on the Blood Red Podcast, Steve McManaman has been discussing the idea of Edwards coming back.
McManaman stated that he’s spoken to Edwards recently as he’s his neighbour, and while he’s not had any confirmation on his potential Liverpool return, his theory is that Edwards couldn’t just return to Anfield in his old role as Sporting Director.

McManaman discussed the Sporting Director.
“Yeah well they should try to bring Michael back, of course they should. Funnily enough I spoke to him the other day about it because he lives by me. In what capacity they would bring him back I don’t know. I think Michael has moved on from being a Sporting Director, I don’t know if he could go back to the same role he had. It would be great if they could come back, but I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes,” McManaman said.
Not looking likely
Unfortunately, it does seem unlikely that Edwards will return to Liverpool.
Edwards left the Reds for a reason – he wanted to start a new chapter in his career, and a return to the Reds in the same capacity would be a backwards step at this point.
The fact that he’s still living on Merseyside is positive at least, but it sounds as though the only way he’d work with Liverpool again is in a different type or role or in some sort of consultancy basis.
This is certainly an interesting situation to keep an eye on.
