Liverpool equalled the biggest victory in Premier League history on Saturday by thrashing Bournemouth 9-0 at Anfield.

The Reds endured a slow start to the new campaign but didn’t take long to go up the gears at the weekend.

Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott – who scored his first Premier League goal – had Liverpool 2-0 up after just six minutes.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino then added one apiece either side of the half-hour mark.

And deep into first-half injury time, Virgil van Dijk made it five with a powerful header from a corner.

The second half saw more of the same, with Chris Mepham scoring an own goal shortly after the restart.

Firmino made it seven just after the hour mark and substitute Fabio Carvalho added an eighth 10 minutes from time,

Diaz, who kick-started the goal-fest, then wrapped it up in the 85th minute of the match with another header.

“It shouldn’t happen”

Paul Merson, writing on Sky Sports, praised Liverpool for going back to their “real” selves on Saturday.

He also backed Jurgen Klopp’s side to continue in the same vein as fixtures start coming thick and fast.

Merson also slated Bournemouth for the “embarrassing” scoreline and bemoaned the “unreal” gulf in class between some of the teams in the league.

“This Premier League has got three or four leagues going on within it,” he wrote. “The gulf in class between some of the teams is unreal.

“Bournemouth have just played Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool and lost to a combined scoreline of 16-0 so it just shows you the difference between the sides is huge.

“I don’t think you should get beat 9-0. I really don’t like that.

“It’s a really embarrassing score. You are a professional football team playing in the Premier League, it shouldn’t happen.

“If you get beat 9-0 on a Sunday morning that’s big in itself. No player, professional or amateur, would like it.

“I was beaten 5-0 as a manager and five was embarrassing enough.

“When it gets to six or seven, it reminds me of the old days and the old teleprinter and they used to spell the number out.

“If someone got beat by seven, they’d spell the number out in brackets. That is how bad it is.”
