Michael Edwards is back at Liverpool, and his focus now will be on appointing a new manager to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds are in a great position on the pitch right now, but there is a lot of work to be done behind the scenes. Bringing Edwards back is massive, and the 44-year-old, along with a new sporting director, is all set to begin the search for the new Liverpool manager.

Michael Edwards will try to appoint Xabi Alonso as new Liverpool manager

Jurgen Klopp announced in January that he will be leaving Liverpool this summer.

The German has been the main man at Anfield for years now. He is the reason why Liverpool have been so successful, and he will be a huge loss when he leaves.

All eyes will be on Michael Edwards now as Liverpool begin to go after their managerial targets. Xabi Alonso is the name on everyone’s minds and is the Reds’ preferred option.

Now, Dean Jones has claimed that Edwards is on board with the idea of appointing 42-year-old Alonso as the next Liverpool boss, and that will be his ‘initial objective’ now.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “We will have to see what the actual reach is of Edwards’ new role but this will extend further than just making appointments.

“He has been looking for a role that could test him to the limit and that will mean working for Liverpool on a global level rather than just specifically in and around the club day-to-day, that’s the impression I get.

“The big job facing Liverpool is to get a new manager sorted and that becomes the priority now. Yes it is important to have news on Edwards and Hughes but the guy that truly defines a football team and the success is the manager.

“I’m told Edwards is on board with the idea of appointing Alonso and that will be the initial objective. But he’s not the only name that has been talked about and so the likes of Amorim and Nagelsmann are still in the picture here I think.”

Michael Edwards could take Liverpool to the next level

Liverpool enjoyed so much success with transfers when Michael Edwards was their sporting director a few years ago.

The 44-year-old played a massive part behind the scenes, and although his role is not just limited to signing players, his impact will be massive.

Xabi Alonso is a wanted man. Bayern Munich are desperate to sign him, and it has been suggested that they are ahead of Liverpool in the race to get him.

However, if there’s one man who can convince Alonso to snub Bayern and return to Liverpool, we think it’s Edwards, and we’re sure he has already started working on that.
