Xabi Alonso to Liverpool won’t go away but Bayern Munich’s interest could be a problem.
Liverpool continued their push for the Premier League title on Wednesday night, beating Luton Town 4-1 at Anfield.
The Reds had to come from behind but got the job done, leaving them four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
A title win would be an emotional end to the Jurgen Klopp with the German set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
Replacing Klopp won’t be easy but Liverpool have to go with somebody – and Xabi Alonso may be the popular choice.
Jamie Carragher on Xabi Alonso
Former Liverpool star Alonso sits eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga having worked wonders at Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso back to Anfield does make some sense but there could be increased competition for his services.
Bayern Munich have just confirmed that Thomas Tuchel will be leaving this summer and they could go for Alonso too.
The Spaniard is a former Bayern man as well and reports from Germany indicate that he would prefer to join Bayern over Liverpool.
That will be a concern for Liverpool and Jamie Carragher has now commented on the situation.
Carragher has told CBS Sports that news of Bayern’s interest is of course a blow for Liverpool, but just hopes he picks the Reds.
Carragher believes that it will be difficult for Alonso to stay at Leverkusen if he wins the league, as there will be huge offers own the table.

“Yes, if there’s other people in for him of course, in for his signature,” said Carragher. “It will be interesting… listen, who knows if he’s going to leave Leverkusen, but I feel, if he goes on to do what we think he’s going to do and win the title, it may be difficult to stay with some great offers and fingers crossed it’s my Liverpool.”
“I just think he’s got his focus on Leverkusen at the moment, he’s still seeing my stories on Instagram – he’s checking in on me! We’ll get to the March international break and I’ll see what’s going on,” he added.
With a league title on the line, Alonso won’t be making any decisions any time soon.
Liverpool and Bayern will both be hugely interesting to him though, especially having turned out for the two clubs in his playing days.
Maybe Carragher can get in his ear, but it’s likely that Liverpool will face a wait to find out if Alonso fancies the move to Anfield.
