‘I’ll make a statement’: Pundit suggests Liverpool have a player who's been better than Bellingham this year

The race for the Ballon d’Or this year seems to be more open than it ever has been.

Indeed, now that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have somewhat faded into the background, the stage is set for another new player to come forward and win the World Player of the Year award.

The likes of Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham are all viable candidates for the World Player of the Year award, but according to Nigel Reo-Coker speaking on CBS, there’s another player who could be in that conversation.

Indeed, Reo-Coker says that Virgil van Dijk should be in the conversation for World Player of the Year if Liverpool go on to win the title alongside the Europa League last year.

Virgil van Dijk may be the best in the world

“I’ll make a statement now when it comes to Virgil van Dijk, if Liverpool win the league title and win the Europa League, Van Dijk should be in the conversation for Player of the Year and World Player of The Year,” Reo-Coker said.

In the conversation

Whether or not Van Dijk is crowned World Player of the Year when all is said and done remains to be seen, but he should certainly be in that conversation.

Indeed, Van Dijk has been imperious for Liverpool all year long, and while Liverpool may or may not win the quadruple, his individual performances speak for themselves.

Unfortunately for Van Dijk, he’s not playing in the Champions League this season and he’s not likely to win the Euros this summer, so when it comes time to do the voting for an award like the Ballon d’Or, other players may well end up ahead of Van Dijk in the minds of the panels who are voting.

Van Dijk has been incredible, but he may have a tough time in terms of winning these individual awards.
