160 Liverpool made some truly fantastic signings this summer.
Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch have hit the ground running at Anfield, but perhaps the signing of the summer was Dominik Szoboszlai.
The Hungarian has been utterly fantastic since joining the Reds, and while Szoboszlai was a £60m signing, not everybody expected Szoboszlai to be this good.
Speaking to The Anfield Wrap, John Barnes has now actually admitted that he’d never even heard of Szoboszlai before this season, noting just how much recruitment has changed in recent years.

Barnes spoke about the midfielder.
“A lot of teams in the past were looking to sign superstar players, but teams now are signing players, and I’ll be honest with you, I should’ve done my homework, but I’d never really heard of Dominik Szoboszlai before, you look at that and we’re going ‘who the hell is Dominik Szoboszlai’, and teams down there like Brighton are signing players like that that you’ve never heard of and all of a sudden they’re selling them for £80-90m,” Barnes said.
No huge names
While it’s a tad embarrassing that Barnes had never heard of Szoboszlai before this season, he does make a great point here.
In the past, successful transfer windows were largely based around signing big names from big clubs, but now, it’s about finding these gems.
Let’s be real, if you told a Liverpool fan 10 years ago that their summer transfer window would be built around a midfielder from Brighton, a Bayern Munich benchwarmer and a 30-year-old Japan international who’d never played a Champions League game, they’d have serious questions, and yet, here we are and Liverpool may have won the transfer window.
The Reds didn’t sign any huge names this summer, but they were smart with their additions and it’s worked out for the best.
