'I hope he does': Michael Owen says 24-year-old Liverpool player can get so much better but Diogo Jota can't

Darwin Nunez remains something of an enigma at Liverpool.

The Uruguayan can either be pure class or pure pony depending on which day you catch him on, but one thing everyone can agree on is that he has massive potential.

Indeed, his raw attributes make him one of the most dangerous players around, and if he can just find a bit of composure and consistency, he should be a superstar.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Michael Owen has been discussing Nunez’s potential, and he says that he has the scope to improve in a way that players like Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo currently can’t.

Darwin Nunez can improve massively

Owen shared his verdict on the striker.

“You look at the future of Liverpool, Mo Salah isn’t going to be there forever. When he goes there’s a massive hole. I look at the team right now and with Gakpo and Jota, can they get better? Maybe a bit, but Jota is a great finisher, it’s not like he has the scope to go and score 30 instead of 15 let’s say. This guy is the one player in the team who can go from there to there, and I hope he does. Decision making is the one thing that will slow him down,” Owen said.

So much potential

Owen isn’t wrong here.

While Jota and Gakpo are both fantastic players, it does feel as though they are the finished product, and while they are brilliant, they’re not that next level of lethal.

Meanwhile, Nunez is far from the finished article as things stand, and if he can just add those finishing touches to his game, he could reach that upper echelon of goalscoring threats.

Nunez has what it takes to reach the very top, he just needs to figure out how to put everything together.
