'I have checked this': Journalist shares what he's been told about Liverpool being linked with £60m PL star

Journalist Dean Jones has shared what someone with connections at Liverpool told him about the chances of Joao Palhinha ending up at Anfield during the January transfer window.

Joao Palhinha is potentially one player to keep a close eye on in the coming weeks. The Fulham midfielder has been outstanding since arriving in the Premier League. And a number of sides are chasing his signature.

Manchester City and Arsenal both want Palhinha. Meanwhile, Liverpool have held talks with Palhinha’s agent about a potential move as the Reds continue their rebuild in the middle of the park.

Journalist plays down chances of Liverpool signing Joao Palhinha next month

However, speaking to Ranks FC, journalist Dean Jones has now played down the chances of the Portuguese moving to Merseyside over the next month.

“There is no way Liverpool are paying £60 million for Palhinha this month,” he said.

“I’d be so surprised. I have checked this with somebody that I know that has good ins at Liverpool. And he says, look, it is being played down. They are linked, they’ve been linked for the best part of a year now. But the likelihood is this is not a transfer that Liverpool are going to look to do in January.”

A midfielder signing could make a huge difference with Reds poised to make title challenge

It really does appear that Liverpool could be one world-class midfield signing away from being genuine title challengers.

Dominik Szoboszlai has been one of the best players in the Premier League for much of this season. Meanwhile, Alexis Mac Allister has impressed. And there is a lot more to come from Ryan Gravenberch.

But there are doubts over whether Wataru Endo is the holding midfielder Liverpool need. Endo has looked a little vulnerable in a couple of games, most notably in the dramatic win over Crystal Palace when he was replaced at half-time.

So it would be a big statement if they did decide to sign Palhinha next month. But clearly, it appears unlikely at this stage.

Palhinha will turn 29 before the start of next season. And Fulham are obviously demanding a huge sum.

So Liverpool may perhaps feel that they can find better value on the market in either this window or the summer.
