Joao Palhinha’s stock continues to grow amid links to Liverpool.
The Portuguese midfielder put in another storming performance against Arsenal on New Year’s Eve, and with the January transfer window now open, there’s growing speculation around the Fulham star’s future.
Liverpool have long been linked with a move for the £17m man, but speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, Mark Ogden has claimed that the Reds don’t be able to do this deal due to the finances involved after spending so much in the summer.

Ogden shared his verdict on this potential transfer.
“I don’t think they have the money. I don’t think after making such a big investment in the squad in the summer they can go out and sign Palhinha, they signed four midfielders in the summer, Endo will be away at the Asian Cup, but I don’t think Liverpool can get that deal done. If any team needs a midfielder it’s Manchester United, but it’s whether or not they can get that deal done,” Ogden said.
Palhinha could be affordable
Ogden says that Liverpool won’t be able to afford Palhinha, but we can’t help but query whether or not that’s right.
Of course, football finances aren’t as straightforward as this, but, in theory, Liverpool should have some money to spend.
Let’s not forget, they agreed a £111m fee for Moises Caicedo in the summer before Chelsea hijacked the deal, and most of that money hasn’t been spend.
Yes, £35m went on Ryan Gravenberch and £15m went on Wataru Endo, but that should still leave £61m leftover.
Palhinha agreed a move to Bayern Munich in the summer for £60m, so perhaps he would be affordable.
Of course, the Reds’ accounting will be much more complicated than simple subtractions and additions, but, in theory, this could be a deal that Jurgen Klopp’s side may actually be able to afford.
