‘I’d say’: Anthony Gordon says 23-year-old Liverpool player is one of his best mates in football

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has admitted that a Liverpool player is currently one of his best friends in football.

Liverpool are currently battling it out for a Premier League title in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Anfield.

The Reds sit level on points with league leaders Arsenal after picking up an impressive 3-1 win at Fulham on Sunday.

As for Newcastle United, Eddie Howe’s side have put a decent run of form together of late.

Their 4-0 win over Tottenham last time out saw them move above Manchester United into sixth place.

One man who has shined at St James’ Park this season is Anthony Gordon.

Of course, the winger won’t exactly be the most popular figure amongst Liverpool supporters after coming through the ranks at Everton.

But Gordon sat down with Gary Neville recently and admitted he’s really close with one Liverpool player.

Gordon says Liverpool star is one of his best mates in football

Speaking on The Overlap, Gordon was quizzed on his best friend in football at the moment.

The Newcastle star was unable to name just one but Curtis Jones was amongst his picks.

“I’d say I’ve got three,” Gordon said. “Curtis Jones, Tommy Doyle, Elliot Anderson. Mixed bag there. Some club, some international.”

Jones is yet to make his England senior debut but he has played alongside Gordon at U21 level.

With both players coming through the ranks in Liverpool, albeit on opposite sides of the Merseyside Derby, it shouldn’t be a huge surprise to hear Gordon name Jones as his close friend.

Jones stats for Liverpool this season

Jones has enjoyed a decent season at Liverpool but has recently lost his place in the side following an ankle injury.

The Englishman is still working his way back to full fitness following a four-week spell on the sidelines.

Klopp admitted he was ‘surprised’ at how tired Jones was during the 3-0 defeat to Atalanta earlier this month.

The midfielder has racked up 33 appearances for Liverpool this term, scoring five times and providing three assists.
