'I am told': Alan Brazil claims Liverpool players are keen on 41-year-old becoming their new manager

Liverpool are on the lookout for a new manager this summer ahead of Jurgen Klopp vacating the Anfield hotseat.

With the Liverpool coach set to leave the club at the end of the season, the Reds are looking to bring in someone worthy of replacing him in the dugout.

Xabi Alonso appears to be the prime candidate for Liverpool due to his record at Bayer Leverkusen so far and the fact he used to play for the Reds and ‘gets’ the club.

The likes of Ruben Amorim and Julian Nagelsmann have also been linked with the Liverpool hotseat.

However, talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil has now thrown another name into the proverbial hat, one that Reds players apparently wouldn’t mind seeing in the dugout. Namely, assistant manager Pep Lijnders.

“I am told the players wouldn’t mind the number two, Pep taking over,” Brazil said on talkSPORT (13/03/24, 6:25 am) amid speculation that Alonso is the favourite.

Dean Saunders replied: “I heard that as well. At least he [Lijnders] knows what’s going on there. It’s difficult, who do you give the job to? That club is that big.”

Liverpool job comes too soon for Pep Lijnders – opinion

Admittedly, it’s not that surprising a claim. Lijnders has done a superb job at Liverpool and you can understand why players wouldn’t mind him taking the reins.

However, the role of assistant manager and that of head coach are two totally different kettles of fish.

Lijnders is a great coach, no doubt about that, but him becoming permanent manager at Liverpool would be a case of him going right at the deep end.

Most of the 41-year-old’s experience so far has been as an assistant, save for a four-and-a-half month spell at NEC Nijmegen back in 2018.

Lijnders has been linked with Ajax, which would be a great role for him to cut his teeth at managerial level and make a name for himself as a head coach.

In the meantime, Liverpool need someone who’s got proven experience of managing at the highest level, something that Alonso is doing right now.
