Janusz Michallik has suggested that he remains convinced that one Liverpool player is indeed better than Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano.
It has been a pretty bleak season for Bayern. Thomas Tuchel’s side have a mountain to climb if they are going to retain their Bundesliga title – which they only won with virtually the last kick of last season.
A number of players have been pretty poor. And one of those who has made a number of mistakes has been Dayot Upamecano. The Frenchman was recently sent off while giving away a penalty in the first-leg of their last 16 tie with Lazio in the Champions League.
Ibrahima Konate is a better player than Dayot Upamecano
Of course, given his nationality and the fact that he joined from RB Leipzig, it is easy to make comparisons between Upamecano and Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate.

It has not always been easy for Konate at Anfield. But speaking on ESPN, Janusz Michallik suggested that he is not at all surprised to see the Liverpool star developing at a faster rate.
“Upamecano, I never felt that he was special. I remember the days in Leipzig where I always felt that Konate was a better player. Not that Konate’s doing unbelievable things at Liverpool, but I continue to think that way,” he said.
Plenty of time for both players to improve significantly
If Konate can remain fit, it does appear that Liverpool have another future star in their ranks. He looks so comfortable alongside Virgil van Dijk. And given his age, there is still plenty of time for him to improve further.
Upamecano has the quality to bounce back from this tricky period in his Bayern career. And given the club he is at, he is going to win plenty of major honours over the next few years.
But you can certainly understand why Michallik places Konate ahead of Upamecano on current evidence.
