'I actually think': Jamie Carragher predicts the points total required to win the Premier League this season

Jamie Carragher has now shared his thoughts on how many points it will take Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester City to win the Premier League.

Having now said goodbye to the last international break of the league season, Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola will be fiercely preparing for Sunday’s monumental clash.

Arsenal lost 4-1 away at the Etihad last season, with Kevin De Bruyne scoring a brace and John Stones and Erling Haaland doing the remaining damage.

Of course, Arsenal come into this game in a different vein of form, buoyed by four league away wins in a row.

Last season they had just suffered the disappointment of failing to beat Liverpool or West Ham United on the road, already feeling a little bit wounded before facing the title-holders.

That being said Jamie Carragher did seem to think Arsenal might still struggle to keep up with both Man City and Liverpool in the final few months when speaking on The Overlap.

Carragher doesn’t think it will take a record-breaking points total to win the Premier League this season, but still thought Arsenal’s tough fixtures could see them fall short.

Jamie Carragher thinks it will take 90 points to win the Premier League this season

Speaking on the podcast, Carragher seemed to think it will be a very close run battle between two famous foes.

He explained: “I actually think 90 points. I was looking at the points on the international break and what you might need to do. I think 90 points.

“That would be Liverpool dropping four points from where they are, Man City dropping four points, I actually think everyone is looking at Arsenal’s fixtures and thinking I could see Arsenal dropping more than four points with the away games they have got.

“I think winning there is not just psychological but because of the points situation, the belief of going to City and winning, you will believe you can go to Old Trafford and win, you will believe you can go to Tottenham and win, which are not easy games.”

For some context to Carragher’s words, Manchester City won the Premier League with 89 points last season and 93 the season before.

So 90 points this time around certainly wouldn’t be anything groundbreaking, even if it would perhaps prove how clear the top three in the league are if they all got close.

This Sunday will be a very telling one, and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side will need to ensure they don’t suffer any slip up at home to Brighton & Hove Albion themselves before the later kick off.

All that being said, Luton Town’s Andros Townsend has recently shared his prediction on who will win the league this season.
