‘Huge gamble’: Pundit says Liverpool would be taking a massive risk if they hired ‘extraordinary’ manager

Liverpool’s search for a new manager will be the talk of the footballing world for the next few months.

Jurgen Klopp has announced that he’s leaving the Reds at the end of the season, and now, Liverpool have the unenviable task of finding a replacement for the legend.

There are a number of top managers out there, and one man who has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield over the past 24 hours is Xabi Alonso.

The Spaniard has been named as someone the Reds could look towards as a potential Klopp replacement, but speaking on ESPN, Steve Nicol has cast some doubt over this potential appointment.

The pundit says that Alonso isn’t experienced enough to take the Liverpool job, claiming that he’s not had enough setbacks in his career to build up the psyche needed to take on such a massive role.

Alonso not experienced enough

Nicol spoke about the idea of the ‘extraordinary’ manager coming to Liverpool.

“Xabi Alonso in his experience as a coach and a manager, I’m not sure he has that to fall back on. He’s never had adversity, everything has been smooth. Klopp at Dortmund had some hard times, losing cup finals is hard, then there was a period when he nearly got relegated. While you wish that wouldn’t happen, it’s part of your make-up and psyche. Xabi Alonso has none of that, so it would be a huge gamble for such a young manager to go into the Liverpool job,” Nicol said.

Not a bad thing

We can see where Nicol is coming from here, in a way, you would want a manager who is a bit more battle-hardened, but the reality is that the best of the best don’t have these setbacks.

Think back to some of the best managerial appointments in recent times. Pep Guardiola hadn’t had a massive setback before joining Man City, Jose Mourinho hadn’t had many setbacks before joining Chelsea – Klopp is the exception to the rule in some ways.

The fact that Alonso has only been successful so far is a positive, and that’s not something that should be held against him.
