Joel Matip embarked on a forward run and combined with Roberto Firmino to set up Mohamed Salah for an easy finish.

However, Milan equalised on 29 minutes through Alexis Saelemaekers, who cut inside and fired past Caoimhin Kelleher.

Four minutes before the break, Liverpool went in front again as Thiago Alcantara fired home from the edge of the box.

Klopp resisted making any substitutions at the interval, instead saving them for just before the hour and onwards.

Two substitutes combined for goal number three, as Bobby Clark played a superb pass for Darwin Nunez to finish on 82 minutes.

Another sub, Ben Doak, helped make it four as he raced down the right wing and squared for Nunez to tap in.

In the ensuing mandatory post-match penalty shootout, Liverpool lost 4-3.

‘Brilliant’

Nunez aside, quite a few players impressed for Liverpool, including several youngsters.

Doak was one of those, with several media outlets singing his praises.

The Liverpool Echo gave the 17-year-old an 8 out of 10 rating for his efforts on the day.

‘Replaced Salah late on,’ they wrote. ‘And hit the post in the final minutes before a brilliant piece of wing play put it on a plate for Nunez’s second.

‘Almost scored himself in stoppage time. A huge future ahead of him.’

Likewise, Liverpool World went with 8 out of 10 for Doak.

‘Might have played just 10 minutes but the 17-year-old was electric,’ they wrote.

‘Constantly put Milan on the back foot, assisted Nunez’s second and almost had a goal of his own.’

Finally, 90Min awarded him a 7 out of 10.

‘Rattled the post with a low, driven shot after coming on, before assisting Nunez,’ they wrote. ‘Brilliant cameo for the teenager.’

Described by James Milner as having ‘absolutely incredible’ abilities, Doak is one of Liverpool’s most exciting youngsters.

Liverpool agreed a £600,000 fee with Celtic for Doak in March, and he’s already playing for the Under-21s.

In addition, he made his senior debut not long ago, featuring against Derby County in the Carabao Cup.
