118 Darwin Nunez scored the latest of late goals for Liverpool today as the beat out Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
Nunez headed in from a cross from Alexis Mac Allister, who had teased the ball into the right area for Nunez to nod home past Matz Sels in the Forest goal. As expected, the goal sent the Liverpool away end and bench into complete carnage as they made it two late wins in successive weeks.
For Jurgen Klopp, the win will feel massive and with both Man City and Arsenal to play this weekend, the pressure has been moved over to those two again.
However, for the stats people, the goal from Nunez also represented an important milestone for the Reds.
According to Premierleague.com, Nunez’s goal was the latest EVER Premier League goal by a Liverpool player, and the tenth latest of all time in the PL.
“Darwin Nunez’s goal for Liverpool is the latest match-winning goal scored by a Liverpool player on record in the Premier League and the 10th latest overall (98:38),” the stat stated.
Leaving it late
There is, of course, a small caveat with the stats on late goals this season. In fact, this season has seen so many late goals that a few are going to be in the record books.
The amount of injury time being played this season means that we are bound to see goals late in the day and we’ve seen Tottenham benefit from this on more than one occasion.
Of course, this is still a nice stat for Liverpool to have in the bank and for Nunez to claim as well.
The Uruguayan is becoming a huge cult hero at Anfield and for him to have a record to go with his goals and stats in general is an added bonus.
Over the years, Nunez is going to be a legend in the eyes of Liverpool fans anyway. This late goal, then, just cements his legacy further.
