Following Virgil Van Dijk’s comments on the weekend, Roy Keane has now made a claim about Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp from the past.
Keane still seems incensed that Van Dijk criticised Manchester United for looking to be resolute and sensible on their trip to Anfield.
Photo by Michael Regan/Getty ImagesThe pundit was speaking on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast and believed United had every right to play for a draw at Liverpool.
In fact, Roy Keane did then use an example from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s days back at Borussia Dortmund.
Keane said: “United didn’t exactly park the bus, because Liverpool had a load of opportunities.
“But my attitude when players, and it doesn’t matter if it’s Man United, when they criticise a team for [defending]. We have all been there, sometimes in your career it’s about surviving and staying in the game. Taking a draw.
“I have seen Liverpool many times and I have seen Klopp, particularly when he was in Dortmund, manage big European games and they would sit in.
“And we used to give him praise all the time saying counter attack, Dortmund were brilliant and Klopp got a good reputation on the back of that. And Dortmund is a big club!
“So this idea that a team, even like Man United, can go away from home and sit in and grind out a draw, I honestly think it’s okay.
“We have all been there we you grind out a result and think ‘we have hung on there’. It’s satisfying.”
Roy Keane thought Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp would understand Man United’s approach
Of course, Van Dijk’s criticism of Erik ten Hag’s approach does still seem harsh to this day.
Anfield is an incredibly tough place to go and a draw will be seen as a victory for 99% of teams.

Keane is right, Klopp did know how to be pragmatic whilst at Dortmund, and he’d also do the same at Liverpool if needed.
Perhaps Virgil Van Dijk was just incredibly frustrated on this occasion, talking out of pure emotion.
Moreover, Liverpool will believe they can win the title this season, and dropping two points at home is always going to be a worry.
That being said, Ian Wright has now made a bold prediction for this Saturday’s big early title-indicator.
And although Jamie Carragher reminded him of what happened last year at Anfield, Wright stayed firm in his view.
