'His destiny': Martin Keown is convinced 'remarkable' 42-year-old wants to replace Klopp at Liverpool

A lot has been made of Jurgen Klopp leaving Liverpool and Martin Keown believes it will be Xabi Alonso who steps into the vacant post this summer.

Alonso is among a number of names being mentioned when it comes to replacing Klopp in the Liverpool hotseat.

The Spaniard is flying with Bayer Leverkusen and currently has his team unbeaten in every competition.

That sort of record, as well as his links to Anfield, has led to rumours he will replace Klopp.

And speaking on the BBC today, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has said that at the moment, he sees Alonso as being destined to take the Liverpool job.

“No [not surprised at the job he’s done at Leverkusen]. Lots of people talked about him didn’t they as being the brains in the midfield when he was at Liverpool. Played under the very best, under Pep, under Ancelotti, under Benitez, it’s all there stored and he’s got his way of working and it’s quite remarkable what he’s doing in Germany. Unbeaten all season, remarkable. It seems as if it’s his destiny now, to arrive at Liverpool,” Keown said.

Alonso has to be under consideration

The problem Liverpool might have when it comes to Xabi Alonso is that if they don’t go and get him this summer, then someone else might.

The likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are watching him as well and if Liverpool stutter, he could easily walk into either of those jobs and make a name for himself again.

Alonso does look the real deal and a move to Liverpool would suit everyone at the end of the season you feel.

The similarities with Klopp when he was at Dortmund are there and on paper, it does look like Alonso is the best of the bunch as it stands.
