‘He was nasty’: Wayne Rooney says player Liverpool signed for £20m was genuinely horrible to play against

Fernando Torres was one of the most graceful strikers in the Premier League during his time at Liverpool.

The Spaniard played some truly beautiful stuff in a red shirt. He scored for fun, and he scored some truly gorgeous goals.

However, according to Wayne Rooney, the one-time £20m Liverpool signing also had another side to his game.

Indeed, speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Rooney has been discussing what it was like to play against Torres at Liverpool, and he says that the attacker was actually a really nasty player who wasn’t scared to leave a foot in or get in his opponent’s faces.

Fernando Torres was nasty

Wayne Rooney shared his verdict on his former rival.

“What was he like he was sort of a special player wasn’t he?” Rooney was asked.

“I think that couple of years he had at Liverpool with Gerrard playing as the number 10, he was dangerous, and he was nasty as well. I don’t think people realise he was always leaving his foot in, arguing with centre-backs. It probably didn’t work out for him as he would’ve liked at Chelsea, but those years at Liverpool, if he carried on like that he would’ve been one of the best in the Premier League,” Rooney said

Surprising

It’s almost surprising to hear this about Torres’ game.

The Spaniard seemed almost a little bit soft at times, especially later in his career at Chelsea, but by the sounds of it, he could always give as good as he got.

It’s easy to forget due to his poor form at Chelsea, but during his time at Liverpool, Torres was genuinely one of the very best players in the world, and as Rooney says, if he could’ve just maintained that form, he would’ve gone down as an all-time great.
