Sir Kenny Dalglish has suggested one Liverpool star is vital to Jurgen Klopp, particularly when it comes to helping the youngsters currently getting their chance for the Reds.
Liverpool have secured the first domestic trophy of the season, with Virgil van Dijk scoring the only goal in extra time as they beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.
What was remarkable about Jurgen Klopp’s side’s win was how many young players who were on the pitch for the additional 30 minutes. Chelsea had a younger side on average. However, it was notable how many academy starlets Liverpool had out there due to injuries.
Sir Kenny Dalglish lauds Virgil van Dijk
With that, van Dijk produced a captain’s performance. Not only did he score the decisive goal, but he also helped keep Mauricio Pochettino’s side at bay.

And speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Sir Kenny Dalglish outlined how important the Dutchman is, particularly as Liverpool negotiate this tricky period.
“He’s vital. He’s the one they look up to, he’s not anything other than constructive with the kids, encouraging with the kids,” he said.
“He’ll tell them when it’s wrong, but he’s not going to remonstrate in front of 80 or 90,000 people to the kids. He’s going to encourage them. And he scored the goal, especially after having one knocked off, which I still can’t understand now, but they got it with a minute to go, that’s a great time to score.”
Liverpool captain not done yet
If there is someone who knows what it takes to be a great leader at Liverpool, it is King Kenny. But this team is doing a brilliant job of securing their spot amongst the all-time greats. And that is saying something considering how much success Liverpool have enjoyed over the years.
Jurgen Klopp is definitely one of the club’s most popular managers. And a number of the players he has worked with are beloved by a fanbase who had a long, long list of heroes to reel off already.
Van Dijk has more than played his part in their success. The arrivals of the centre-back and Alisson Becker helped take Liverpool to that next level again.
And judging by Sunday’s performance, there is plenty more for this team to achieve.
