Virgil van Dijk has been back to his best this season, and he was brilliant against Luton again on Wednesday evening.
The Dutch defender put in a real captain’s performance against the Hatters. He led his team to a 4-1 win from 1-0 down against the Hatters, and he was just imperious on the day.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, John Hartson has been full of praise for the defender after this performance, and he says that Van Dijk may well be the best centre-back in the world once again.

Hartson spoke highly of the £75m man.
“He’s been terrific again all season. Tonight at 1-0 down they didn’t feel sorry for themselves, they knew they’d come back. A good captain’s performance, we always say this about him, he’s so consistent, he’s so good, I would put him up there with if not the best centre-back in the world,” Hartson said.
Best in the world
It’s hard to disagree with Hartson’s view here.
Last season, it did seem as though Van Dijk was losing his grip on the title of best centre-back on the planet, but this year, he’s proven he may well be better than ever before and he’s back on top of the pile.
Of course, players such as William Saliba are very much in that conversation these days, but Van Dijk has shown throughout this season, and especially on Wednesday night, that he’s the player who sets the bar in terms of centre-back brilliance, and it’s up to someone else to get up to his level.
Van Dijk may have been out of sorts last season, but this term, he’s undoubtedly been back to his best and he could well lead Liverpool to a Premier League title.
