'He's not totally happy': £30m reported Liverpool target now given green light for January move - Sky journalist

Liverpool have been linked with Donyell Malen in recent weeks and speculation over his future continues to intensify ahead of the January transfer window.

In late September, BILD reported that the Reds had set their sights on the Borussia Dortmund and Netherlands attacking star.

Now, Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has relayed information which could hand Liverpool a big boost in pursuit of Malen.

Plettenberg took to X – tagging fellow Sky Sport Germany presenter Patrick Berger – to say Malen is open for a new challenge in 2024 as he’s “not totally happy” at Dortmund.

Better yet for the likes of Liverpool, Dortmund are apparently open to letting him go, his agency is sounding out any potential leads, and he could go for as little as €30-35million (£25.7-30million).

BILD previously that Liverpool have a long-standing interest in Malen, having apparently nearly signed him in the summer of 2021 before his move to Dortmund.

That interest has not gone away, according to the report from last week. They insist that Liverpool still have Malen ‘on their radar’ and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp ‘is still keeping an eye on him’.

Admittedly, Liverpool aren’t exactly short of options in attack at present. However, with the Saudi Pro League expected to try their luck for Mohamed Salah, the Reds may just be setting up contingency plans.

Liverpool eyeing ‘very dangerous’ Donyell Malen

Malen is a ‘very dangerous‘ player of the highest calibre. At 24, he has a mix of experience and promise, and is yet to reach his prime. In fact, he seems to be getting better and better.

In 2021, Breaking the Lines published an in-depth scouting report about the Dutchman, who played for PSV Eindhoven at the time.

‘He is a quick, technically proficient modern attacker who is not too dependent on others to create chances in the final third and who is comfortable using either foot to score goals,’ they wrote.

‘One thing that makes Malen stand out against Eredivisie defences is his speed.

‘Although he is naturally a striker, his speed enables him to play on either flank, as he can easily win a 1v1 duel and arrive into the right goal-scoring position.’
