'He's not cheap': Journalist suggests Liverpool could now move for £52m defender in January

Liverpool know all too well how defensive injuries can derail a season.

The 2020/21 season has left serious scars on this fanbase, and we don’t want to fathom the possibility of the same situation playing out again.

However, after Joel Matip’s injury at the weekend, the Reds do look rather light at the back now, but, luckily, the January transfer window is just around the corner.

Speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing Liverpool’s plans for the window, and he’s now suggested that a new defender could be on the agenda for the Merseyside club.

Interestingly, Jones named Goncalo Inacio as a player the Reds could look towards, claiming that the young Portuguese defender has been on their radar for quite some time now.

Liverpool could move for Inacio

Jones shared what he knows about Liverpool and the £52m defender.

“This Matip injury is probably going to bring new expectations from the Liverpool fanbase that perhaps they go into the market to try and sign a centre-back.

“It’s not going to be easy to go and do that at the very top level. The name that’s probably hanging around most since the back of last summer is Goncalo Inacio at Sporting who Liverpool have had on their radar for a while and so have Man United.

“He’s not cheap. The age that he’s at, the profile of him, the league he’s coming from all make sense in terms of how Liverpool would want to step up their build. It’s just can they do it in January?

“I hadn’t really been expectant of it, but now there’s this injury to Matip, it does make me wonder if they’re brave enough to go and do this.”

Not cheap, but potentially worth it

Inacio won’t come cheaply – he reportedly has a £52m release clause in his contract, but he could well be worth it.

At the age of just 22, Inacio could solve the Reds’ centre-back problem for the next decade if he’s as good as some say he is.

Of course, £52m is a lot of money, but when you’re securing a player this young and this talented, it’s always worth pushing the boat out.

Inacio is certainly one to keep an eye on heading into January.
