Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has described Mateusz Musialowski as an “exceptional talent” following the youngster’s senior debut.

The Liverpool boss spoke about the 20-year-old to TNT Sports after the Reds’ Europa League last-16 second-leg win over Sparta Prague.

Musialowski joined the Liverpool academy from Polish outfit Lodz back in August 2020 and it didn’t take long for him to impress in the Reds’ youth ranks.

The forward enjoyed an amazing maiden season at Anfield, registering 12 goals and three assists from 25 Under-18 outings.

Musialowski then split his time between the Under-18s and Under-21s during the 2021/22 campaign, once again scoring his way into double figures.

However, the 2022/23 campaign proved more challenging for the Poland youth international. He was in and out of Barry Lewtas’ side and scored just twice all season.

Indeed, Musialowski was very close to leaving Liverpool last summer. He was set to join Austrian side TSV Hartberg on a free transfer in the latter stages of the window.

However, the deal fell through, and the youngster stayed put. Since then, his game has improved, and he’s now playing and scoring regularly for the Under-21s once again.

One reward for Musialowski has come in the shape of a senior debut, with Klopp subbing him on in the 74th minute of Thursday night’s game.

When TNT Sports told Klopp that Musialowski was the 56th player he had given a Liverpool debut to aged 20 or under, he replied: “I don’t care really about the statistic, but now Mateusz, you have to say, deserved it as well.

“That’s how it is. He trains now a few weeks with us – he was already with us, then not.

“Players develop differently. He’s an exceptional talent, but obviously here in the club, we see football in a specific way. He gets it now more and more, I really think he’s now ready.

“That’s why he got [his minutes]. I obviously had the choice between a few and thought ‘come on, give him these few minutes, he waited long enough’. Another great kid.”

It’s great to see Musialowski finally make his Liverpool bow after making the most of his second chance at Anfield.

His contract expires at the end of the season, so let’s hope that he has convinced the Reds to offer him a new deal.
