'He's alright': BBC pundit admits he didn't expect 29-year-old Liverpool player to become as good as he has

Nedum Onuoha has shared what he thought of Andrew Robertson after coming against the future Liverpool star while he was playing in the Championship earlier in his career.

Andrew Robertson recently handed Jurgen Klopp’s men a big boost by returning from injury. The 29-year-old will be hoping to play a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title push this season.

Certainly, there is absolutely no question that Robertson has proved to be an amazing signing. It is almost remarkable to think that the Reds paid £8 million for the full-back while he was at Hull City.

It would be interesting to know whether the Liverpool hierarchy thought the Scotland captain could reach the levels he has done.

Nedum Onuoha seemingly did not think he could. Speaking on Planet Premier League, Onuoha spoke about the quality Jurgen Klopp has worked with during his time at Anfield. And while discussing the full-backs, he noted that he was not blown away when facing Robertson earlier in his career.

“The rise of say Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, I played against Robertson in the Championship. And I thought, ‘oh, he’s alright’. I didn’t think he was going to be Andy Robertson,” he said.

Left-back has proved people wrong throughout his career

Robertson is no stranger to being doubted. He was released by Celtic as a teenager before ending up at Queen’s Park.

The fact that Robertson spent three seasons with Hull suggests that the top sides did have their doubts about whether he would be able to raise his game to that top tier.

But Liverpool have been vindicated for bringing him to Anfield. Like so many of the key players in Klopp’s squad, he will now forever be an Anfield hero.
