Danny Murphy has responded to being asked whether he believes that Virgil van Dijk is near the level he was previously at as he named the Liverpool captain in his Premier League team of the season so far.
Virgil van Dijk has long been considered the best centre-back in the division, if not the world. He has certainly been a game-changing signing for the Reds, playing a key role in their rise to the summit of the domestic and European mountains.
Understandably, there were concerns about whether he would find his best form again after he spent the large majority of the 2020/21 season out with injury.

But van Dijk has barely missed a minute for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season as they lead the way in the Premier League. Van Dijk has produced a number of outstanding performances this season.

“I think he’s got back to his best, and that’s why I’ve put him in,” he said. “He’s a huge reason why Liverpool are sat at the top of the table. He looks really strong again, really quick, motivated, all the things we saw of him when he was getting all the praise. He’s getting back to it. I don’t see a weakness in his game.”
Reds skipper still has plenty of time at the top
Obviously, Liverpool have to think about what they are going to do when the time comes for van Dijk to step aside and take a less prominent role.
But the signs this season suggest that van Dijk has a lot more to give before that time comes. He will be 33 by the start of next season. But with the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold around him, he can adapt his game.
Perhaps he is not the player he once was. But given the level he was previously at, he probably does not even need to be.
