121 Darren Bent has claimed that Virgil van Dijk was actually a lot better last season than many give him credit for, insisting that the Liverpool captain remains the best defender in the Premier League.
Virgil van Dijk must be dreaming of ending his first season as Liverpool captain by lifting the league title. Certainly, Jurgen Klopp’s men have put themselves in a fantastic position.
It has been a turbulent few years for the Dutchman. Obviously, he missed most of the 2020/21 season due to injury. And he seemed to take some time to find his best form after that.

Rio Ferdinand praised van Dijk for accepting that he is going to receive criticism for his past form. But it seems that Darren Bent may argue that a lot of the criticism was unjustified.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent discussed Liverpool’s title credentials this season. And he claimed that the 32-year-old is potentially playing as well as he ever has.
“Now I think van Dijk has been playing as well as he done for, I even think last season he was very good, but because of the standards that he sets, even if he drops a little bit, people are like: ‘see, he’s not the same player’. He is unbelievable. He’s still the best defender in the Premier League, in my opinion,” he said.
Reds’ backline is not getting enough credit
Danny Murphy previously noted that van Dijk does not appear to have a weakness to his game. Liverpool boast the best defensive record in the Premier League this season, having conceded just 18 goals.
Of course, van Dijk is not the only reason for that. Alisson has been excellent when called upon. And Ibrahima Konate’s potential is obvious if he can continue to stay fit.
But van Dijk is the player who brings it all together. Liverpool looked incredibly assured when he is in the side. He would be the perfect skipper to lift the trophy if it proves to be another historic campaign on Merseyside.
