Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk scored the winner in the cup final yesterday and the Dutchman has won serious praise from Tim Sherwood.

Van Dijk rose highest to nod in from close range to win the game for his club and leave Chelsea scratching their heads.

For Liverpool, the notion of them playing so many young players yesterday and getting over the line has been the narrative dominating proceedings since the win was confirmed.

However, Tim Sherwood has lauded the role of captain Van Dijk in helping those young players, suggesting he is the ideal teacher for the youngsters.

Speaking on The Kelly and Wrighty show, former Spurs boss Sherwood has said that Van Dijk must be a dream for Jurgen Klopp to have.

“Virgil van Dijk is a dream for any young kid. He looks at it like I’m going to do my job and I’m going to look after you. I’m going to do the job for you it’s telling them boys push on, push on in there do what you’re good at don’t cover me up I can deal with it. Looks after them. You cannot be good as a young player if you haven’t got good teachers and the teacher not necessarily from the side line it has to come from within the team and I think Van Dijk is absolute manager’s dream,” Sherwood said.

The best in the world

Virgil van Dijk might have dipped off when he was trying to come back from his injury but right now, he’s back to being the best around.

That £75m Liverpool spent now looks a bargain and nobody in world football would suggest he has been a waste of time or money.

Van Dijk’s headed winner yesterday was just what he deserved. He led by example and in the end, showed those young players how to step up in the biggest moment.
