147 John Giles has suggested that Jurgen Klopp simply can’t rely on Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez.
Liverpool have enjoyed a promising start to the campaign and find themselves just a point behind league leaders Arsenal.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are arguably ahead of schedule after rebuilding their squad over the past year or so.
One player who’s come through the door as part of the rebuild is Darwin Nunez.
The 24-year-old was snapped up from Benfica for a fee worth up to £85 million last summer. Nunez has put in some impressive displays for the Reds but it’s fair to say his finishing leaves plenty to be desired.
He’s made improvements under Klopp’s guidance this year though, registering 14 goal involvements in 24 appearances in all competitions.
But John Giles has told The Stand that he feels Nunez is too inconsistent for Klopp to be able to depend on him as a player.
Giles says Klopp can’t trust Nunez
Speaking on The Stand, Giles claimed that Nunez ‘loses his head’ far too easily and can’t be trusted.
“His head doesn’t seem to be there sometimes,” he said. “Sometimes you see him and think ‘he’s a really top-class player.’
“He’s one of those that can be. They’re no good to you really overall because you can’t depend on them to do what needs to be done.
“He loses his head very easily as well. He gets very aggressive, which is ok if you’re doing it in the right way but not if you’re giving fouls away.”
Nunez has frustrated Liverpool fans at times this season due to his questionable finishing. But his all-round game has improved dramatically since his switch to Anfield last summer.
Indeed, the Uruguay international provides a real focal point for Liverpool upfront and his link-up play has been brilliant this term.
Nevertheless, he will have to start to find the back of the net on a more regular basis if he is to continue to lead the line for Liverpool.
Klopp will be hoping to deliver another title to Anfield in the near future and they will need a prolific goalscorer to make that a reality.
