‘He could work wonders’: Jermaine Pennant says 42-year-old manager could be perfect for Liverpool

Liverpool are looking for a new manager for the first time in almost 10 years.

Jurgen Klopp has announced that he’s leaving Anfield at the end of the season, and the Reds now need to find a replacement.

Replacing Klopp is perhaps the most unenviable task in football, but that’s the task Liverpool now face, and it’s going to be interesting to see who they now turn to.

Speaking on Stadium Astro, Jermaine Pennant has been discussing Liverpool’s search for a new manager, and he’s outlined one man who he thinks is perfect for the job.

Indeed, according to Pennant, Xabi Alonso is the man for the job, claiming that he knows the club well enough and he’s doing the business at Bayer Leverkusen.

Pennant backs Alonso

The pundit shared his verdict on Alonso.

“Yes, I think he would be the perfect man if you ask me. When you takeover a club you have to buy into that club, the city, know how it runs, Xabi has been there and done it, he’s a legend himself as a player. He knows how it works, he knows the city, he knows the fans, what he’s doing to stop Bayern Munich winning the league for an 11th straight time is amazing. I think to take over Klopp with the base he’s left, he could work wonders with that,” Pennant said.

Looks perfect

It’s very early days for Alonso’s managerial career, but it has to be said he ticks a lot of boxes for Liverpool post-Klopp.

He’s a legend from his playing days, he plays attacking football, and, much like Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, he’s breaking the status quo in the Bundesliga.

Replacing Klopp is a tough task, but if there’s anyone who’s up to the challenge it may well be Alonso as he looks like a potential managerial superstar.
