‘He can get bored’: Pundit says £75m Liverpool player doesn’t look interested sometimes

Virgil van Dijk is undoubtedly one of the very best players in the Premier League.

The Dutch defender is a class above almost all of his peers, and while his talent is a blessing, sometimes it is also a curse.

That’s the theory of Tony Cascarino who has been speaking on The Game Football Podcast about the Liverpool captain.

Cascarino says that Van Dijk is an incredible player, but he has noticed that the defender does have a tendency to perhaps switch off sometimes or get bored in games where he finds things just a bit too easy.

Van Dijk can switch off

Cascarino shared his verdict on the £75m man.

“He’s always been a terrific player, but I think the game is too easy for him. That’s the only stumbling block with Virgil. He can get bored at times and he needs that adrenaline to play at his very best. He’s blisteringly quick, great in the air, he has so much quality and the only trouble for him is if he slightly switches off,” Cascarino said.

Can backfire

Cascarino is right, Van Dijk does look sometimes like he isn’t switched on when he’s expecting an easier game than he’s getting.

The match against Arsenal two weeks ago is a prime example. He may have felt that Kai Havertz wouldn’t have caused him too many problems, but that lapse in concentration allowed the Gunners to exploit some key mistakes from the defender.

In the biggest of games where Van Dijk is locked in, he’s unbeatable, but it’s those matches where a team or a player turn up on the day and are better than you may expect where he can sometimes struggle.

Van Dijk has all of the talent in the world, but perhaps he needs to rethink his mentality sometimes heading into certain matches.
