'Great to see': Gareth Southgate admits he's really enjoyed watching one Liverpool player recently

Gareth Southgate has included Liverpool star Joe Gomez in his England side ahead of friendlies against Brazil and Belgium – and the England boss said he is a long-term admirer of the Reds ace.

Gomez, 26, has rid himself of injury issues at Anfield this season and is getting back to his best. Already, he has played 39 times in all competitions for the Reds – helping them keep 13 clean sheets this term.

The versatile ace has captained Liverpool this season, and has played on the right, the left and in the middle of the defence. Jurgen Klopp says Gomez has developed “massively” during the 23-24 season.

Gomez won his 11th and final England cap back in October 2020, a 3-0 win over Wales. But now, he is back in the mix with England. Southgate lauded him after announcing his squad for Belgium and Brazil.

“It’s great to see him playing regularly. Such a lovely boy. I’ve known him since the U17’s. We’ve always had a great faith in Joe. Love working with Joe, versatile, good form and we look forward to seeing him.”

Gomez has arrived back in the England squad at a good time, in terms of his chances of establishing himself ahead of Euro 2024. Gomez’s ability to play in numerous roles will really work into his favour.

England lack options on the left side of the defence at the moment despite the call-up handed to Ben Chilwell. So, it is good timing for the Liverpool defender, and on a personal level, he will be delighted.

Gary Lineker has also been among those to praise Gomez in the last few weeks. His focus will be on the next two Liverpool games – facing Sparta Prague tonight in the Europe League, and then Man United.
