'Going to throw one at you': Troy Deeney suggests surprise name for FSG to appoint as Liverpool's next manager

A number of managers have been linked with the Liverpool job, and Troy Deeney has now thrown a surprise name into the mix.

The Reds had a fantastic weekend, didn’t they? Not only did they pick up a hard-fought win against Brighton and Hove Albion but they also saw their two title rivals, Arsenal and Manchester City, drop points.

That has pushed Jurgen Klopp‘s side to the top of the Premier League table, and Liverpool’s players now have the perfect chance to win it for their outgoing manager.

Irrespective of what happens in the next nine games, Liverpool will have a new boss at the helm this summer. Deeney has suggested a name for FSG to consider as Klopp’s successor.

Troy Deeney suggests a surprise name for FSG to appoint as Liverpool’s next manager

Jurgen Klopp announced in January that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

It will be the end of an era for Reds fans. The German has brought so much joy to everyone associated with the club, and saying goodbye to him will be really difficult.

Liverpool’s search for a new manager has begun, but unfortunately for them, their main target, Xabi Alonso, has publicly turned down a summer move.

The Reds are now considering other names on their shortlist, and they are looking at quite a few exciting options. Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi are two of them.

Troy Deeney has now had his say on who Liverpool should appoint as their next manager, and he has thrown a surprise name into the hat.

The former Watford captain believes the Reds need a coach to replace Klopp, not a manager, which is why he think Wolves boss Gary O’Neil would be a great option at Anfield.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Deeney said: “As you said there with the Moyes [at Manchester United] reference, it can be a real big shoe to fill and you’ve got to be a certain type of character.

“I’m going to throw one at you, throw a name at you – I think they need a coach next year more than a manager. So I’m going to say Gary O’Neil!”

Gary Neville’s comments on Gary O’Neil are very interesting

Gary O’Neil has been outstanding as a manager, hasn’t he?

The 40-year-old did a magnificent job at Bournemouth last season, and he has been incredible at Wolverhampton Wanderers this time as well.

His great work has earned him links with the Manchester United job recently, and Gary Neville has had his say on the possibility of seeing him replace Erik ten Hag.

“I don’t see the fit between Gary O’Neil and Man United,” Neville said in March.

“Instinctively, as a fan of a club, you feel it or you don’t, it’s not a feeling I’ve had. I’ve not had a feeling that, that (person) feels like a United manager.”

These are very interesting comments from Neville because the Liverpool job, at the moment, is much bigger than the one at Manchester United, and if a legend of the Old Trafford club doesn’t quite fancy O’Neil, he is perhaps not the man FSG should be looking at either – not yet at least.
