'Going to be the better player': ESPN pundit says Liverpool man has more potential than £60m Tottenham star

Steve Nicol has shared whether he believes Darwin Nunez or Richarlison will become the better player, as he was asked to pick between the Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur forwards.

Darwin Nunez was on the scoresheet on Saturday as the Reds beat Burnley at Anfield. The Uruguayan scored his eighth league goal of the season as Jurgen Klopp’s men returned to the top of the Premier League table.

Richarlison meanwhile, had a quiet day at the office by his recent standards. The Brazilian had scored nine goals in his previous 10 appearances in all competitions. But he missed a couple of good chances as Spurs needed a stoppage-time winner to beat Brighton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Darwin Nunez backed to become a better player than Richarlison

Richarlison has silenced a lot of his doubters in recent times. And it is a similar story for Nunez, who has 15 goal contributions in the top-flight this season.

Speaking to ESPN, Steve Nicol suggested that he would be happy with either in his team right now, but backed the Liverpool star to have a higher ceiling.

“They’re both scoring goals. So I don’t suppose really you could make a mistake right now,” he said. “I think, in the long run, Darwin Nunez is going to be the better player. But I think, right now, it’s a toss of the coin because they’re both scoring goals.

“Richarlison, as I said, I don’t think is a goalscoring number nine, although he’s putting the ball in the back of the net. And Darwin Nunez is the same. He’s putting the ball in the back of the net as well. It’s a tough choice, and there’s not a wrong answer, not right now.”

Both forwards silencing their critics

The pair both deserve enormous credit for how impressive they have been this term. Both players endured difficult and ultimately underwhelming first seasons at their respective clubs.

There were doubts over whether Richarlison would ever come good at Tottenham following his £60 million move. And Nunez’s finishing ability has come in for criticism.

But the pair have 18 league goals between them this season. And given that Richarlison is the older of the two at 26, there is no reason why they both cannot improve considerably in the years to come.

But certainly, if Nunez can find a way to become a little more lethal, he could prove to be a world-class goalscorer for Liverpool.
